TOPIC: Thoughts on entry level shotgun

Thoughts on entry level shotgun 10 years 9 months ago #28

I had a Stevens Savage 20 ga. single shot as a youngster, but I purchased a Mossberg Maverick 88 pump 20 ga. last year. I have only put about 10 shells through it. It functioned fine and was a very manageable shotgun. I just am curious as to other's thoughts on this shotgun as it pertains to longevity and reliability as an entry level model. I paid under $200 brand new.
I added a meprolight tritium front bead sight but have made no other modifications.
I have entertained the thought to have the receiver drilled and tapped for a rail so I can put a holographic sight on it for bird hunting. Is that something commonly done (the sight, not the rail)?

Don't know much about them Kenny. I do know tax time this year. The wife and I will be getting one in 12 ga.and 20 ga. Wanting to do a little trap shooting with the missus. Definitely low priced. I will pick up 2 with $410.00. And walk out with change. The academy's around me carry them. But they have been out of stock since Christmas. That's why I finally gave up for now and picked up a little 22 plinker to play with. Its Mossberg also.

Sights have not traditionally been common on shotguns, but they are becoming more so with their use in self-defense and 3-gun. I would look into the shotgun-specific sights (such as Redring) rather than sights that are made for rifles/pistols.

Kenny, I bought a Maverick for my brother, and it has treated him well. They're made in Texas, so you kinda can't go wrong! Then only drawback to budget shotguns is that you can't find parts for them. But a pump shotgun really shouldn't need much maintenance, so for most people that's a moot point.

I had heard that the barrels are interchangable with the Mossy 500s along with some other parts but just unclear on which parts.

Most parts on Mossberg 500s are interchangeable, and there are 1,000s of third party parts and accessories for them.
