DRT Frangible HP Ammo

First, a Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to all of our visitors. May the holidays bring you joy, family, and many blessings!

As many of you know, I am fascinated by new and unusual ammunition. It is clear that ammunition has evolved over the past 50 years in many positive ways, although I also recognize that many of these new developments don't turn out to be what we expected. But it is from all of these new developments that we eventually get the kinds of advances that we are looking for and that serve our purposes.

In particular, I always have concerns about over-penetration, due to my personal situation. I live in a neighborhood where my neighbors are ten or so feet away from me on both sides, there are many children in the area, and often they are playing out in the street, so for me, this is something I have to consider when choosing ammunition to defend my home.

This frangible ammo from DRT (Dynamic Research Technologies) seems to do just that, with jacketed hollowpoint bullets, filled with compressed metal dust, which "disintegrates" starting at 1 to 2 inches from impact (in handgun ammo; in rifle ammo the penetration before disintegrating is deeper) creating what appears to be a pretty serious expanding cavity, and yet not penetrating much more than 11 or 12 inches. And for those who care about such things, they are also lead-free.

Now I'm not saying it's the end-all in defensive ammo, just something to consider if your circumstances are similar to mine. I use different ammo for the guns I carry outside the home and in my vehicle; again, trying to choose the right tools for the job.

You may want to check out their website for more detailed information, specs, and a description of the technology. Likewise, below is a YouTube video from tnoutdoors9 performing a gel test with the 9mm version, as well as some photos of the unusual-looking ammo. Enjoy!
